Benthic Terrain Modeler

Developed by the Davey Jones' Locker Seafloor Mapping and Marine GIS Laboratory at Oregon State University and the NOAA Coastal Services Center

The Benthic Terrain Modeler (BTM) is a collection of ESRI ArcGIS-based tools used with bathymetric data sets to examine the deepwater benthic environment. Users can create data sets of characteristics such as slope, bathymetric position, and rugosity and then define the relationships between them using a data dictionary that defines, or classifies, benthic terrain.

Features
  • Guides users through the terrain classification process and allows users to create and distribute their own benthic terrain classifications
  • Resamples bathymetric data sets to different resolutions
  • Creates bathymetric position index (BPI) data sets at large or small scales; Depending on user needs, creates BPI data sets for either classifying smaller or larger features within the benthic landscape
  • Standardizes the BPI data sets, allowing for easier parameter entry during the classification process
  • Creates a rugosity data set as a measure of terrain complexity, or the "bumpiness" of the terrain
  • Provides functionality to create and edit classification dictionary files in a user-friendly environment
Technical Specs
  • ArcGIS® 8.x or 9.0 with Service Pack 2 (or greater)
  • Spatial Analyst extension
