Georegulations

Produced and distributed by the NOAA Coastal Services Center

Georegulations are the spatial depictions of coastal and ocean legislation. Produced as spatial data layers that can be used in a geographic information system (GIS), georegulations are built by capturing the spatial "footprint" of the legislation. To date, georegulations have been developed at the federal and state levels.

Georegulations depicting federal legislation as well as accompanying agency jurisdictions have been developed by the NOAA Coastal Services Center for the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coast regions of the U.S., as well as for its Pacific Islands and Caribbean territories. State-level georegulations have been developed by Photo Science, Inc. for the Gulf of Mexico, California, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The completion of additional national and state-level data is underway.

Data Specifications
  • Area of Coverage: Federal-level georegulations in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts of U.S. and its Pacific Islands and Caribbean territories; state-level georegulations in the Gulf of Mexico, California, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire
  • Format: ESRI Shapefile
  • Scale: 1:100,000
  • Accuracy: The accuracy of this data set is based on source data that is assumed to meet U.S. National Map Accuracy Standards. These data are regional in scale and are intended for regional coastal and ocean planning purposes. They are not for use with scales greater than 1:100,000.
